Phase Terminology

Ted Ligety, Beaver Creek, 2012, GS 1

Heard someone call the end of a turn an “exit.”  Psycho-linguistically, that may be a more effective way of labeling the end phase of a turn. Describing the start and ends of turns as “entries” and “exits” may at times be better, especially during coaching instruction. I know people use “shaping phase” a lot to describe the middle of a turn. I think enter-shape-exit better communicates the notion of movement when describing turn phases, as opposed to beginning-middle-end.

I’m thinking about how verbs vs. nouns might be more effective when describing skiing and body performance movements.

Here is a document being passed around listing movement analysis words intended to help newer instructors speak the language.
